Week 2 of the renovation started with a bang – 7 truckloads of fill was delivered on Monday morning.
School holidays started so the kids loved watching one truck back in, dump and leave and then the next arrive 5 minutes later.
The bobcats came to spread it over the backyard and at the back it was about 400mm deep.
Tuesday they pegged it out with stringlines (which the kids took to as hurdles!) They also LOVE climbing the huge pile of dirt that was left at the front after the site clearing – where there’s dirt, there’s my kids!
Of all the weeks for it to be school holidays, it had to be this one!
Then things got really dusty when the trenches were dug… me and the kids tried to exit the house whenever possible – movies, playdates, whatever!
Who’s idea was it to live here during all this??
Of course Renoboy was the first into the trench, and all the kids played “Super Mario” on the pads. It’s doing my head in trying to keep them off it!
On Thursday the diggers were there again and the plumbers too installing the underfloor plumbing. Our existing plumbing was disconnected so we couldn’t use the toilet or sinks (#goodtimes).
On a brighter note, during the chaos, the delivery truck arrived with my bath, toilet and basin that I’d ordered online from Sydney – and they look awesome, yay! Of course we needed to put them in the back shed, but we couldn’t even get to the back so we had to put them on the neighbour’s porch for the day!
After being outside for just 5 minutes organising the delivery and talking to the plumber, I was so hot, dusty and thirsty that I scrapped my thoughts of coffee and got frozen Cokes from Hungry Jacks for us and all the workers. They loved the much needed refreshment!
Then we popped to the beach for some much needed fresh air…
Temporary fencing was put up across the front and side to hopefully stop any randoms falling down the holes!
We had to keep the soaker hose on the front over the weekend to try to firm up the sandy soil and stop it collapsing.
The amount of dirt coming into the house is crazy! I’ve been sweeping and vacuuming everyday but everything is covered in dust.
The underfloor plumbing is all done and we can see where the new bathroom/WC/vanity will be. The pest controllers came on Saturday to spray the trenches.
Sunday of the long weekend was a nice escape from the dirt cos hubby and I celebrated our 12th wedding anniversary with a delicious dinner and night in a city hotel, while the kid’s stayed at my sister’s. We realised it was our first night together without the kids since our 10th anniversary (2 years ago!), so a well overdue break.
The boys were back at it first thing Tuesday laying the plastic and reinforcing, followed by the mesh later in the week. Once it was all done the engineer and council came to inspect it.
Walking back and forth over that to get in and out of the house is a challenge to say the least. The builder put down a board for us to walk across at the front though which helps (it’s literally “walking the plank!”)
The slab was due to be laid on Wednesday May 5th, but it poured with rain on the Monday and Tuesday which put the concreters behind schedule on other jobs. We’re now due to pour on Monday/Tuesday 9th/10th but I’m not holding my breath cos it’s due to rain again then, grrr!
Fingers crossed we’ll have a slab though next week.
